In a Dancing with the Stars shocker, football player Rashad Jennings and his partner Emma Slater beat out frontrunner Normani Kordei and her partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy to take home the Season 24 mirror-ball trophy.
“It could be us, it could not be us, I don’t know what the hell is about to happen,” Jennings told reporters is what he was thinking as he waited to hear the results on Tuesday night’s show. “That’s a very long waiting period right there, waiting to see if you’ve won or not. I was super shocked, I don’t know if you caught my face but I literally couldn’t believe it.”
“It still hasn’t sunk in at all,” Slater addedd. “I just wanted it for him. I didn’t even think about it for me. For him, he deserves it so much. He worked so hard, and he’s never won anything. I know him so well now. He’s had to try for everything his whole life. Nothing has come easy, no matter what people think, and he’s got a heart of absolute solid gold. So I wanted him to be proud of something and to have that confidence. That’s more important for me than the trophy.”
Not only did Normani not win the dance competition, but she and Val wound up in third place behind former Chicago Cubs baseball player David Ross and his partner Lindsay Arnold.
Jennings says he was happy to be standing in the final two with Ross because, “We four guys said while we were casually talking who we thought would be in the finals, we agreed that it would be four women. So for it to be me and him up there, we just looked at each other and said, ‘This is completely different to what we thought.’ David has become a friend and there are no losers in this at all. We were going to be for happy for whoever won, but I can tell you what… I feel so good that it was Emma and me. It’s not something that happens every day. The whole entire journey solidified all of the hard work that we put in.”
Because of all that hard work, Jennings is going to keep his dancing shoes on a bit longer as a part of this summer’s Dancing with the Stars tour.
