‘Batman: The Animated Series’ Blu-ray Release Announced

The definitive Batman for a generation of fans is finally making the leap to the Blu-ray format.

At New York Comic Con, Warner Bros. Home Video announced that Batman: The Animated Series will be getting a Blu-ray release in 2018.

The reveal came during a panel when DVD copies of Batman: The Animated Series were being given away. The moderator, Gary Miereanu (who also heads up WB Home Video publicity), held up a copy of the DVD set and mentioned to the crowd that it’s the last time they’re giving away this particular set. WB will be releasing Batman: The Animated Series on Blu-Ray “later in 2018,” and that’s all that was said about it.

The Warner Bros. Shop followed up, making the announcement official and sending it wide with a tweet reading, “Batman: The Animated Series coming to Blu-ray next year. #NYCC.”

The announcement of the Blu-ray release comes just after the 25th anniversary ofBatman: The Animated Series. The show debuted in 1992, hot off the Batman buzz built up by Tim Burton’s Batman movie and the sequel, Batman Returns, which released in the same year.

Although it’s not the first time this particular version of Batman has come to blu-ray—earlier this year the beloved movie Mask of the Phantasmmarked his arrival in the format—the new release, announced at the show’s celebratory 25th anniversary panel at New York Comic Con this past weekend, will mark the first time the TV series itself will be available in true HD, following the DVD volumes first released in 2004 and 2005.

No other details have been confirmed thus far about the show’s release other than the fact that it’s happening, and that it’s expected to release some time in late 2018. Will it be a complete collection or a series of volumes? Will it be remastered in 4K or be 1080p? There’s plenty of questions still lingering about the release, but that doesn’t dampen the joy of finally getting to see this iconic series in crisp, clean glory.
