17. ‘Dear John’ (2010)

In this sugary-sweet Nicholas Sparks adaptation, directed by Lasse Hallstrom, Tatum plays a soldier who enlists in the Army Special Forces following 9/11 and, while on leave, he falls in love for the saucer-eyed beauty played by Amanda Seyfried.

The story plays out in typical Sparks fashion, and it’s a testament to Tatum’s innate ability to imbibe a fairly stock character with gravitas and dimension, that “Dear John” works as well as it does.
